better red than undead

"Comrade Varennikov reported a hundred missing outside Yaroslavl. No bodies. No blood. Just boots stuck in the snow. We asked for reinforcements. Moscow sent pamphlets."

— Field Report, 4th Red Infantry, February 1919

overview

Better Red Than Undead is a tactical squad-focused tabletop RPG set in an alternate 1920 where new fronts have opened up in the Russian Civil War, and the dead refuse to stay buried. Using the step-dice variant of the Year Zero Engine (YZE), players navigate high-risk missions using a tactical hexcrawl system. Stress, infection, and horde mechanics introduce constant pressure, as even a single mistake can have lasting consequences.

the world

After the first reports of the Grey Plague were confirmed, the rest of the world moved quickly to seal Russia off for good. The ensuing blockades and embargoes ensured that neither ship nor salvation would ever come for those trapped inside. But despite the quarantine, the war continues. Embattled Bolsheviks fend off Finnish nationalists to the north, while the Japanese army lays claim to Tsarist territories in the east. Meanwhile, Anarchist upstarts and Khorasani rebels seize their chances in the chaos. And everywhere, the dead haunt the living. Explore each playable faction on the Factions page, or learn more about the conflict and the undead outbreak in the Timeline and The Grey Plague pages.

The revolution died screaming, comrade.

The Tsar's bones are turning to dust in some shit-heap grave, the empire's a bloated carcass, and every asshole with a flag from Sevastopol to Sakhalin is picking it clean. Those that aren't infected, that is…

Heard some say the Grey Plague crawled out of one of Fritzy's rotten trenches, but the commander swears he knows a factory hand out east says it was concocted in some bourgeois laboratory.

Doesn't really matter now, though. Mother Russia's been walled off like a plague ward and left to rot. All's left to do is light a cigarette, chamber that last round, and pray the poor bastard next to you stays dead until dawn.

“Sometimes a wild god comes to the table.
He is awkward and does not know the ways
Of porcelain, or fork and mustard and silver.
His voice makes vinegar from wine
And brings the dead to life.”
